Al Haverkamp’s practice focuses on insurance coverage disputes, construction claims and business litigation. He acts as insurance coverage counsel for the San Diego County Schools Joint Powers Authority and outside general counsel for several developers, contractors and businesses. An area of particular focus is representing public entities in disputes with their Excess Workers’ Compensation Reimbursement Carriers. Mr. Haverkamp recovered $2.7 million on behalf of the San Diego Unified School District in a bad faith case against the District’s Excess Workers’ Compensation Carrier. He also recovered $1.3 million for the City of Escondido in a bad faith case filed in US District Court against the City’s Excess WC carrier. He currently represents the Cities of Buena Park, Manhattan Beach, and Irvine as well as the California Self-Insurers’ Security Fund, North County Fire Protection District, California Water Services Co., and Long Beach Transit in coverage disputes with their Excess Workers’ Compensation insurers. Mr. Haverkamp has presented to the California Self-Insurers’ Association and San Diego PARMA Chapter on coverage issues involving Excess Workers’ Compensation policies. He is also set to speak at the annual meeting of the National Council of Self-Insurers.
Mr. Haverkamp also represents developers, homebuilders, general contractors and subcontractors in construction litigation involving insurance, indemnity, breach of contract, delay and disruption claims. He has extensive experience litigating coverage issues involving OCIPs and Wraps, CGL policies, Business Interruption coverage, Property insurance, and Builders’ Risk insurance. Past litigation experience includes winning a $13 million punitive damage award for the Fresno Unified School District. This award was upheld on appeal. He has recovered over $30 million for institutional clients in insurance coverage disputes.
A graduate of the University of Notre Dame, he received his law degree from the University of Colorado School of Law. After law school, Al immediately began gaining trial experience as a deputy district attorney prosecuting serious crimes.
